Hello! My name is Mr. Greg Billion, and this will be my second year teaching at St. Lawrence O’Toole. I teach middle school science and help with music ministry for school liturgies. I am part of the Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE) Teaching Fellows, which is a masters program for education at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. ACE teachers study on campus at Notre Dame for two summers, and then teach in inner-city Catholic schools for two school years before graduating from the program. ACE teachers are placed in a city and school by the program, without being able to choose where they go, so I am extremely lucky to have been placed at SLOT in Oakland! We live in community with other ACE teachers who are placed in the same city, and serve 34 communities total across the country. I live with four other ACE teachers in Oakland, who also teach at various Catholic schools here.
I was born and raised in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and grew up with my parents and 5 siblings. My favorite past time from my youth was playing football. In high school, I earned all-city, all-conference, and all-state awards as a running back in the highest division of competition. After high school, I felt called to enter the Catholic seminary, St. John Vianney seminary, located at the University of St. Thomas. I studied in the seminary for the first 2.5 years of my four years of undergrad. I loved every day I spent in the seminary, although I had to give up competitive sports, but knew it was not my calling after 2.5 years. At St. Thomas, I triple majored in Philosophy, Catholic Studies, and Pre-med. Upon graduation, I continued to work in a hospital setting, where I had worked through college, for an additional year as a Patient Care Technician on a surgical/trauma unit. I then decided that I wanted to pursue a career in education, and entered graduate school at Notre Dame. My long-term goals are to continue to teach, as well as pursuing additional graduate studies in my content area to improve my knowledge and expertise as a teacher! Some of my hobbies include playing guitar, singing in choirs, snow skiing, hiking, going to concerts, cooking, exploring cities, and traveling. I love the Bay Area, and I love this community. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of it for another year!
